That sounds like the right strategy there, AckAck. There's really not any other way to do it that I know of.

The thing about the Pyro is that anyone can just suicide into a group of enemies via W + mouse1. Pyro gets much more interesting when you start using the flair gun and using the compression blast correctly. Backburner is ghey.

As a spy main, I can't seem to justify using the backburner as a pyro... everytime it seems viable I think to myself... hell I could just stab these mofos.

for me its a health issue. i can get behind the enemy team no problem, buting getting the stabs off without a pyro shoving his flamethrower up my ass is a hard thing to do, solution, The Backburner. I get all my dirty work done and even get to go home and gloat about it =]

Well, the pyro isn't really a great assault class if you want to live to tell the tail... Unless, of course, they have a soldier which you can send all of the rockets back at them with... Last night I got my first "two birds with one stone" deflecting one of bandaids grenades... The backburner is great for ambushing enemies from behind and fucking them up, but I think the cons outweigh the pros... Besides, ambush is not really my style, else i would play spy...

Hi, this is Assaf.

For a few linear maps(pl), and most of the control point maps, especially with few people (so you don't get noticed), the pyro's backburner is actually a good choice, since you can use the aternate route and surprise your enemies from behind. A great example of this is dustbowl stage three, with the tunnel that only spies use. The idea is that on defence, you go there, bump into a few spies and kill them from the front, then wait at teh entrance. After a few people go by, and you realise that these are the only ones that have spawned (Tip: wait for the slower classes too), come out and flame only when near enough. This way, you put the attacking team in a kind of a trap since they can go forwards and get killed by your teammates/sentry or they could face you and expose themselves to your teammates pushing.

For ctf and busy servers don't bother with the backburner, since rockets will be coming at you all the time, and all alternate routes are used.

About the flare-gun: It's shit. It deals very low damage and takes extreme accuracy, like the demoman pipe bombs, except that they explode and can hit multiple people, and they can roll. If you are using the flaregun for long range, chances are you are firing over the front line, orelse you would have used the backburner. Think: Behind the front line,w aht are there? Dispensers and medics. Hence, flaregun = useless. The shotgun is also a much better choice since it fires linearly, and the shots are not affected by gravity. Because of this, your chances of hitting are much higher. Not to mention that it does way more damage than the flare gun. The flare gun is only good for maps with no medikits like warpath. But still, you CAN find medikits lying around, and the fires do eventually go out. For Arena, where there are no med packs, flaregun is your choice, unless you are facing another pyro. If you are confronted by another pyro, you need the shotgun, badly.

The axetinguisher: very very awsome. It works very well witht he pyro's compression blast, since enemies can get pinned against walls like that. Not much to say about this weapon, since it's so awsome. The axetinguisher has no downsides imo, since no one uses the regular axe anyways.

I would disagree, I think the flair gun is really awesome. I've used it to kill just about every class (notably the scouts, they run backwards in strait lines) and snipers... Flair gun is SO good against snipers... They stand perfectly still, and you can shoot them without being in their line of site, which FORCES them to leave their post to go get a med pack... It's a great gun for finishing off enemies, or getting them started from afar. An important thing to note about the flair gun is that the farther away you are, them ore damage it does... The shotgun isn't gonna go shit long range, where as the flair gun you can pop out, shoot em once, then start your long path around the level to come up behind them. You can take out half a medic from mediumish range while not being in the line of site for long enough for his heavy to spin up his gun. It's not really meant to be a primary weapon, but it's amazing to just pop out and nail people with. It can be really devastating when used correctly...

Also, in tight situations, I have been known to take down sentry guns with the flair...

Its not hard to get a kill or two with the pyro, you're right, but it has a higher skill ceiling than most classes. Take a look at this if you dont believe me.

True. But I'm placing that player in comparison to the regular pub pyro, or even the average comp pyro. Its not often you see one that's able to utilize deflect-jumping practically.

Oh yeah, hes head and shoulders above any pyro I've ever seen. But seriously, any of those soldiers could have whipped out the shotty and gotten him with 4 shots EASILY. These are all in pick-up game/scrims too, otherwise I wouldt expect a soldier to do that.

And pyro isnt his main class, its sniper. He made this video and the other one to prove how low of a skill ceiling he has and how easy it is to master pyro and own people with it. He made the first one with 11 hours as pyro and the other with 33.
