How many of you are remotely competent enough to do any programming? I know a few of you recently started doing classes in programming, and people have been asking me more and more about programming in vent recently... I'd be interested in making a really simple minigame with some people if ya'll want, nothing big, just a fun little project... It'd also be great experience for you pussies who are afraid to do anything outside of these "class" things I hear so much about...

I'd love to see Kanji jump in here, he's our in house indy game expert.

I don't care about being original or even having the game all that fun, I just think it'd be fun to do something as a group...

If you have any relevant skills and want to help out, lemme know. I am not interested in people who say "I'll help with game design" but then aren't willing to take the time to flesh out details and work through mechanics. I'm also not interested in people saying "I'll learn X language so I can help!" but don't really have any intention of actually working towards that language for a few hours every night to get decent with it.
What I am looking for is "I took a X language class and can kind of write in it" or "I've done a few projects in Y" or "I have some awesome well thought out ideas that aren't completely retarded" (<-- Kanji)...

This is also DaGuava's chance to prove he's not all talk.

I'm thinking dead simple side scroller physics game?

C++. It's really not as hard as everyone thinks it is. Fucking learn it. All of you.

I got a physics engine bound in with a 2d graphics view today. All I have is a falling cube, but I also only worked on it for about 3 hours in like 100 degree heat with 5 billion percent humidity...

<concept>
We make a 2d side scroller with box2d physics (basically a perfect 2d physics engine)... The basic game mechanics are that you have a character and enemies, all with real physics joints holding together their bodies. enemies are massive tangles of joints holding them together (think Cyriak) and we use a "learn to walk" algorithm to make the creatures learn how to walk with their given bodies, obviously with hardcoded hints to make them work better... As you blow off their limbs with your weapon, they re-learn how to walk with their adjusted bodies and keep coming at you. you need to strategically blow off the proper limbs to make them unable to continue their pursuit. Some creatures might spawn more joints as they go, relearning to use the new joints too (think Cyriak)... More to be worked on later.

Qt is completely event driven and object oriented. All the actual graphics drawing is done for you, you literally add objects and then manipulate them in an object oriented way, events get triggers on things like mouse or keyboard events, and you change things from there... I've integrated in the Box2d processing loop into the Qt event loop, and that's about it.

I'm at work now, so I wont have the code handy for another ~8 hours.

In the mean time, if you're interested in wrapping your head around Qt (which will make C++ about a billion and a half times easier to work with, because Qt is FUCKING AMAZING) check out these lovely documents:

Thanks, over the next few days I'll take a look at all of this stuff. School just started back in, but I have an off block (Hour and 30 min) during the school day where I have no classes, so that would also be a good time to look at this.

I've taken in a class in Java and Javascript and can sort of write in it, and now that I'm going to have too much free time I'd be happy to pick fights over annoying game mechanics and minute details.  I'm an Engineering major, it's what I do for fun.

this thread was my own doing, unrelated to him. I have a 2d engine working with physics and have done a great deal of work on this. I figured I would invite any of you to play along with me, but no one bit so I just continued working all on my lonesome...

Now-a-days I'm doing a lot of Minecraft modding, have you seen magiccarpet yet? It's awesome.
