Getting a new case
« on: April 15, 2010, 01:05:25 pm »
Suggestions?

I've been going through Newegg for a while, but most of the nice cases always seem to have quality control issues. FML

Get a simple case by a good brand. A well made case will make you a million times happier than a flashy one in the long run.

Thats really all there is to it. Just make sure its big enough to allow enough air flow.

Did you remember to feed your gigapet as well? Pokemon...seriously? I'm not that old but... get off my lawn

Simple cases usually don't have:

-Dust filters
-Enough fans
-Enough space
-Enough air flow
-Good wire routing

Etc.

When I say "nice" case, I don't mean the shit with the most LEDs, I mean a functionally "nice" case. I've got a "simple" case, which is why I'm now looking for a new one. I tried installing a 4870x2 last night and it didn't fit because the connector on my HD made it some millimeters too big. All of my other SATA ports are more or less covered by the other wires from the PSU. Among other annoyances...

Antec 1200

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129043&cm_re=antec_1200-_-11-129-043-_-Product

Is there a case like this (high intake, large fans, roomy, etc.) without all the lights and the control panel?

Why would you not want lights and a control panel?

Because most of the quality control issues and extra costs are associated with frivolous shit like that.

You're so fucking narrow-minded dude. Do you read any reviews before you buy shit, or do you just look at the pictures and the price tag?

Antec 300 isn't a full tower size, but is very nice and should fit without being gaudy.

I know, I read through them. Not all of them, but I click on the ratings to filter what the negative reviews said to make sure it's not some moron who didn't know what they were doing. I'm just being really cautious because of static issues, the control panel not working, etc. That's what all of the negative ones had was like grounding issues, or bent parts. I don't want to be one of them, you know?

I may have found it.

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=n82e16811129058

It has lights but it looks like anything with full filter coverage is going to have lights and direct fan controls.

Anyone have this case or a friend with one?

You can buy filters seperately for about a buck per 120mm fan on newegg, don't limit your case selection based on that, you'll end up with a less-than-perfect case. Do that and buy an Antec, sorry to break it to you but FuLLBLeeD is 100% correct here. I have friends who own them too, and i wish i had gotten one.

Also, our definition of good is the same, we're definitely on the same page here. When I say "simple" I mean no stupid shit like fully transparent case with LED's embedded in the corners and shit like that...

My friend with an Antec has 11, yes eleven, 120mm fans in his case. It makes a deep deep whooshing sound, and cools the half of the room it's rear faces... There is a noticeable wind flow from it. It's wicked funny.

That 902 looks godly, plus all the intakes are covered. And I'm not saying Antec is shitty or something... they made my PSU (very pleased), I was just being cautious about getting a case with christmas lights and a thermostat on it because of the homogeneity of the negative reviews on that sort of case (regardless of brand, Antec, CM, whatever).

However, the local Best Buy has the Antec 902 in stock and I get paid this Saturday. Even though Best Buy is usually gay and over-priced, they charge the same as Newegg for it, and I won't have to fuck with shipping when I buy it or if I run into trouble.

More suggestions wanted though. So if you think you know of a good, simple case that is known to fit dust filters without modding, please let me know.

P.S. Your friend's case sounds godly, lol.

The filters on newegg can be attached to any case, they're awesome, I own em. My point was to not make filters the deciding factor, because you can put them on anything.

Yeah, my friend casemodded the shit out of it, he has a bunch of air directing pieces of plastic that he has mounted all over the place, both inside and outside... Most of his fans are unprotected (no grate), so it's way quieter and way less cat friendly than the average case. I think he has at least 3 on the top, 2 on the bottom, 2 on the front, 2 of the back, and i can't remember where the last one is... The air directors make it so that it's a constant flow without airflows ever colliding... Because the air never colides it's also quieter than the average case, you just get that deep 120mm sound amped times 11... The air flow goes bottom to top and front to back, as all cases should be.

I'll see if I can get him to post a picture, he's coming back to Keene this weekend... He played once or twice on the TF2 server as NickNack...
