The Scientist
« on: February 17, 2010, 09:37:40 pm »
This is the class-specific thread for the Scientist (name subject to change). He is going to be an archetypal glass cannon who uses (one at a time) his creations do battle.

Start posting fuckers! When I find more time, I'll throw in what ideas Chris and I have discussed already.

I'll call myself a conspiracy theorist if you call yourself a coincidence theorist.

INVENTOR (I vote for calling him Scientist): High damage, good range, poor survivability.
This is logical because his range will give him a chance to deal damage before his poor defense factors in too much.

Quote
Inventor
Basic elemental character. He invents devices to wear onto the field. While his damage is huge do to his insane gadgets, he's still just a scientist and therefore is basically made of tissue paper. His primary weaponry consists of 3 elements: Fire, electricity, and steam. Fire is extremely high damage, electricity has disabling effects, and steam does AoE damage.
Inventor Pros: With his crazy inventions at his disposal, he can deal out more damage per second than any other class in the game. His stuns are effective, his AoE is great crowd control, and his nukes are devastating.
Inventor Cons: He's not a soldier. He's made of tissue paper, as opposed to the thick skinned brutes you see fighting along side him. Because of this looking at him wrong basically kills him. If you loose control of the battle and don't have a meat shield or a quick way out, you're dead faster than you can blink.

We were thinking it'd be cool if each character had their own sort of skill point system.

One of my ideas for the Scientist...

The Scientist can spec into however many base inventions, which unlocks 4 exclusive modifications for each invention, which unlocks 2 mutually exclusive refinements for each modification.

One invention can be based around electricity and another one around fire.

One can be a mid-range "bolt thrower." The other a longer range "flame spitter."

Some modifications for the bolt thrower could be:
(1) Tesla coil, which allows turning the separate bolts of electricty into a shorter range but spread out and constant barrage of electricity. (1a) The first refinement would increase the range of the spray, but it would have a smaller radius. (1b) The second refinement would allow the electricity to jump from person to person.

(2) Parabolic dish, which allows you to create an electromagnetic field that can reflect metal objects. (2a) The first refinement would be a super-powered set of lights inside the dish that allow you to blind and/or damage enemies. (2b) The second refinement would allow you to create stronger and bigger electromagnetic fields in bursts at the cost of having an initially smaller field.

So essentially, instead of learning new spells, he gets new toys for his guns? I like that.

They're additions. I made the end-refinements powerful but mutually exclusive so you can't min-max and blow this guy up too much.

I'll call myself a conspiracy theorist if you call yourself a coincidence theorist.

By mix max do you mean putting 1 skill point into each prerequisite and then dumping the rest into the best skill? Aka: Diablo 2 1.09?

Like, dumping everything into a single invention or two, e.g., getting a constant, long-race arc of electricity that also lets the current jumping to different people. Just stuff that would be compoundingly effective would be reserved for the refinements, since they're mutually exclusive. But yeah, same principle as what you said.

I'll call myself a conspiracy theorist if you call yourself a coincidence theorist.

so, making your tesla beam be high damage long range, slow.
;
low damage, medium range, high spread;
or really short, medium damage, really fast rate?
that would be kind of cool...
