The Engineer
« on: February 17, 2010, 09:35:18 pm »
This is the class-specific idea thread for the Engineer (name subject to change). He is going to be a more balanced fighter who works with a slew of mechanical minions.

Start posting fuckers! I'll add in ideas from discussions between Chris and myself when I find more time.

I'll call myself a conspiracy theorist if you call yourself a coincidence theorist.

ENGINEER: High damage, average range and survivability.
This is logical because he needs minions and excellent micromanagement to deal damage, so he isn't horribly punished in the range or defense department. However, his reliance on minions and good micromanagement put a limitation on his damage, so it isn't out of line with the rest of his stats.

Mother Fucking Engineer!
In just about every single game ever that has an Engineer or a Necromancer, they fucking suck. They're the worst class in the game and have a skill ceiling so low you can barely stand up. I want a GOOD engineer class. He'll have a mixture of stationary and mobile things he can build with much of his power coming from the items he has equipped augmenting his creations. The minions shouldn't be completely self sufficient, and should require lots of attention and micromanaging to make them good. This will be a thinking man's class, depending a lot on placing the right things at the right time and keeping track of all of your creations very well. He'll have mechanics for healing existing creations to keep them alive... I will be paying a lot of attention to this class, and I will definitely main this class. I don't want him to be OP -- every engy player out there likes having their class hard to play -- but I want him to be viable.
Engineer Pros: With a small army to fight for you it's easy to stand back and never take a hit. So long as you keep your shit running, you really have nothing to worry about.
Engineer Cons: Playing this class will require a large amount of attention and micromanaging to make sure the battle stays in your favor and make sure your numbers stay up high. Not paying attention for even a moment could easily cost you the battle.

Did you remember to feed your gigapet as well? Pokemon...seriously? I'm not that old but... get off my lawn

I was thinking the Engineer could get 2 skill trees. One would have self-use abilities and new minions. The other would be minion abilities, upgrades and self upgrades.

Another thing that would be cool for the engineer is if he could have a fair number of minions out at one time, but certain minions lock up larger amounts of battery. Battery would be his mana. Let's say his max battery is 200, and a minion uses up 20 battery to run, then the engineer's max battery is 180. It doesn't regenerate or have a recurring cost, it will be out indefinitely and just put a certain drain on his battery. Maybe at the end of his minions tree he could get a mech suit that disallows using other minions.

That's a really good idea actually.
What kind of skills would we be talking in the self use tree?

I thought something cool would be if the engineer had just a shotgun, and could fire it, or swing it. Some of the improvements he could receive would be to beef up his shotgun a little. Starting out it does fairly low damage outside of close range because of the large spread, but on hit the target will stagger. The melee is weak but gives you a little distance after a hit.

Upgrades could be cool stuff like...

Undermounted mechanical drill on the shotgun's barrel. It gives good melee range and single-target damage, but slow attack speed makes him vulnerable (I'm thinking he's "stuck" boring into a target for a couple seconds, but it's a guaranteed kill on low and medium armor targets). So you could shoot a group of enemies and get away with drilling one.

Pressurized shotgun shells. Your shotgun deals more damage up-close and adds longer stagger on hit, but has fewer pellets per shot.
