Connection problems
« on: February 14, 2010, 08:11:38 pm »
Well, I've been having horrid connection problems for months now at my dorm.  Basically what happens is that I can connect to the network fine, but the data flow in and out is periodically interupted for a small amount of time (20-30 secs).  Unfortunately, this is enough to cause the Steam connection to reset and kick me out of any games online.  I've played with my adapter settings many times and that only produces a temporary fix (5-10 min).  I've called the tech guys at my school twice and they haven't been much help.  I've never had a problem with any other wireless network, just the network at my college.  The network uses the Cisco NAC Agent for security purposes.  I'm not sure if that would cause problems with Steam or not.  Hell, I'm not even sure if its just a problem with Steam or my connection as a whole.

So, if anyone has any ideas, please spare me more raging at my computer...I'm sure my desk will appreciate the decrease in violent beatings.

After reading the first sentence and a half, is anyone torrenting on your network? Most ISP's limit the number of connections, which means that torrenting randomly blows up your tubes.

There is likely some torrenting.  However, the university's policy prohibts it, and you'll get fined some SHITLOAD of money if you get caught.  As for the limit, Auburn University is pretty damn huge, and the wireless network is campus wide, so I don't think the connections could easily max out.  I guess that might apply to the specific router in my hall that my connection comes from.

Do you have the same problem connected to other wireless routers of the same network in your school?

Does it happen on other networks? Also, have you tried VPNing into another network and seeing if the same slowdowns happen?... It's probably just windows networking stack freaking out, it's really bad.

I haven't had any problems with any other wireless networks, only happens on the campus network.

boot into a linux livecd and see if the issue exists there too... If it does, it's probably hardware... Try one of those cheap USB wifi adapters... If it doesn't then your computer is probably being violated in the ass by shitware...

Thing is, everthing works fine on different wireless networks, so I assume that the hardware is fine.  I don't have linex laying around either...

Maybe I should restate my question, is there any specific adapter/wireless settings dealing with connection consistency and strength that I could play around with?

I'm not a huge tech guy, so nothing too complicated please.

If there's not likely anything you guys can help me with, thats fine, just looking for any tips to try.

Are you able to get a wired connection to your school's internet? If so see what happens, maybe it will give us a hint.

No wired connections, everthing is wireless across campus....which as I said earlier, is retarded.

I love my isp (local telephone company) for their ability to actually fix problems and know wtf is going on so they can keep me informed. I won't get pissed with probs once in a great while as long as I can get updates on what's happening.

Whenever I have an ISP issue I get to go through the wonderful, "Is your modem plugged in?  Is its power cord plugged in?  Is your computer on?" It makes me rage.

The first thing I say when I call is "I work with computers for a living, so I've already done the basics and you can use technical terms with me"...

This was true even when I didn't work with computers for a living :P

Myself as well, .92 mb downstream is enough to make a small child cry.

I spike just over 2, though I usually hover around 1-1.5... Those are megabytes a second, not megabits...

Do you use a router?  If so, try connecting directly to the modem and checking the speed.

I get 1.5-2 down connected to my router, and around 3 without it.

I'm sure you already know this*, but ISP's measure in megabits, so the number "10" in an advertisement is actually 1.25 megabytes.... 10 megabytes a second is faster than most school districts have, and requires fiber optics**...

*I don't think you actually already knew this
**I could be wrong about that, it was true a few years ago though...

1 MB  = 8 Mb, Comcast offers 6.25 MB (50 Mb) max for businesses using cable, anything higher probably needs fiber.  For fiber Comcast offers up to 1 Gb/s (128 MB), but you'd have to be a business (or rich) to afford that.

Google is considering offering 1 Gb/s to homes. http://www.google.com/appserve/fiberrfi
