I think all builds need to have good damage, but some secondary trait is what will define them. What's the point of good defense if you lose because you have no offense? Anyways, characters that can't kill things on their own won't be fun for most people, so even if you disagree with the beneath suggestions, keep the fun factor in mind if nothing else.

Anyways,

TANK: High damage, poor range, high survivability.
This is logical because his defense makes up for bad range, and he can really dish it out once he gets to you.

INVENTOR (I vote for calling him Scientist): High damage, good range, poor survivability.
This is logical because his range will give him a chance to deal damage before his poor defense factors in too much.

ENGINEER: High damage, average range and survivability.
This is logical because he needs minions and excellent micromanagement to deal damage, so he isn't horribly punished in the range or defense department. However, his reliance on minions and good micromanagement put a limitation on his damage, so it isn't out of line with the rest of his stats.

I'll call myself a conspiracy theorist if you call yourself a coincidence theorist.

I agree that all classes need to have good damage. No class will have bad damage. I do not think that all classes should have high damage (in theory, that just means that're all decent, as they're all par)... The Inventor should do more damage than tank. If tank is only lacking in range, then he's wildly OP compared to Inventor. That's the traditional layout in classes, where the caster class is a squishy nuker. That's even true in HoN... I'm not saying that tank should have shit damage, he'll be quite a powerful force, but the Inventor's nukes should be the best DPS...
Like, looking at Diablo II, the meteor sorc builds are 100% designed to put out insane amounts damage, higher than almost any build (although panny's are really OP with similar DPS but crazy higher survivability)...

ALL classes need to be viable solos, each with pros and cons... A tank will do enough damage to solo, but it will not be as much as a nuke inventor build.

I think what we're going to end up with from specialization trees is something along the lines of:

A Tank tree (Maybe put Melee range damage in this tree, too)
A Spellcaster/long range damage tree
A Summoned Unit tree (Engineer)
A Crowd Control/Disable tree

And then you could go into greater depth with splitting branches of abilities that have prerequisites in each tree.

He needs to have tons of armor and a badass weapon that has short range, like a super shotgun. Concept art stat!

SF4 is like solving rubics cubes really fast... no real skill required, just motor memory, practice, and fast thinking...

What a bout a Very lose class based system, much how diablo I was constructed, finding skill "Books". However More practically skill points that You can aquire by slaying boss monsters, special  Monsters, or quite possibly normal monsters. These skill points could be spent at a vendor to increase your skills, or some other form of spendage is viable. this way your skills can improve when your level does not. (Upgrage your steam rig by finding bits of coal or screws, or the steam punk equivalent to nanites/cybermodules)

I just find that the class names are cool, and that i enjoy haveing skills higher than my level.

This is Beeji, and when I'm not being a colossal faggot to everyone I'm actually a pretty damn good writer; I can help flesh out the setting. It's pretty crazy right now so I really don't have time to help much with art (my other talent). If my help is welcomed, I can ensure the lack of frog politicians shooting snake wards and robotic golems who can stop time because of their stolen souls.

TL;DR- I can make sure the game does not have an ass backwards, dumbshit backstory(see: Heroes of Newerth).

Sounds perfect, whenever you get a chance you should post a thread with some ideas to get brainstorming going. In all likelihood, you'll be able to pretty much say whatever you want and people will agree, it's just good in case someone has a great idea to throw in there.

Thanks!

I'm with Mag on this one.
