Dwarf Fortess
« on: March 25, 2009, 02:16:35 pm »
It might be the nerdiest game ever made, but it is arguably the best game ever written of all time. Please tell me at least one of you guys has played this game before today. I made an above ground fortress once and it was really fun, I had a moat and a drawbridge that i build, with strategically placed archer posts... Also, my underground fort had an elaborate entrance system allowing me to kill entire enemy armies without actually going into battle... SUCH A GOOD GAME!

So it's completely text based, like nethack style, and it's absolutely unbelievably fucking amazing. Don't bother trying to play it without watching at least 3 or 4 tutorial videos online... There's one by a Europian sounding guy, I highly recommend that one.

BEST GAME EVER (R-Tard can back me up there)

It's quite possibly one of the most elaborate, but well done, games I've ever played... You can do really really awesome things with the switches and stuff... My last fortress I was working on a floodable entry way that would fill up to the ceiling, and then drain out again. It was an awesome design.

Be careful of water!

Hmm, I don't remember what aquaducts do in the game, rivers are REALLY nice though... I build a really cool system where I had an underground canal going from the river to my area, then it was locked shut with a floodgate and a steel grate (for filtering purposes), on the other side of the floodgate was my well reservoir. So I put a switch that goes off when water depth is < 4 to open the floodgate and let water in (until it is once again up to 4)... I effectively had a self-refilling well that filtered out fish... It was awesome... I did indeed flood my area twice on accident while constructing it though, and i then had to wall off a small part of my bedrooms as they were now part of the reservoir :P

This game is absurdly elaborate, I might have to play a little when I get home... I had a mega city with ~300 dwarves in it and ridiculous surplus of everything... They key to getting big, is make sure you have an extremely sustainable export so you can trade for the things you can't (or don't want to) produce, then just farm that export as fast and efficiently as possible.
