So, donations are at a several month low, and the TF2 server is currently off because I've been poor all last month and about 50% of this coming month. My question to you folks is: Do we want to keep the TF2 server?... I don't play TF2 regularly anymore, and every time I've gone to play the server has always been empty.

The forums and the vent have become the "binding" part of shens, keeping us all together and lulzy. The TF2 server is more of a relic of old times at this point. I mean, honestly, how many of you really play on it? I don't mind helping pay for and running the TF2 server. I certainly would be all for revamping the server with new plugins (including a new sound plugin, they exist)... I don't mind writing custom plugins for the server either. What I don't want to do is put money and time towards something that you guys don't benefit from.

I'd say just let it die. I'm slowly losing interest in this game anyway as Valve seems content with shitting out hats and gimmicky updates instead of fixing the game's core balance issues.

Thats a hard decision to make. It seems that the majority of our community is in either high school or college and doesn't have the time or money to put into the server at the moment. I would gladly donate if I wasn't a poor college kid myself. I admit I have had alot of spare time on my hands to play games, but obviously the server is rarely active, although I will usually get on if someone asks me to.

Unfortunately, as Fullbleed said, gameplay has declined and Valve doesn't seem to be fixing it any time soon.

I would find it hard to axe the server considering this community was built aroung it.
Besides, I thought there was some talk about starting some competitive play again in the summer.

I don't consider my words having much weight around here, but its seems that possibly waiting til summer and asking this question then would be a better choice.

Come summer, if people want to play, I can always turn the server back on again...

In the past two weeks, our steam group has gotten over 300 hours of TF2 play.... How many do you think were on our server? I would guess less than a 3rd.... Does the server really need to be here? We're all well in touch, we use vent, we're all steam friends.... I vote for taking it down until such a day that we're active enough to warrant getting it again. Right now, we just don't have enough usage to justify paying for it.

Again, when I'm not poor like right now, I don't mind paying for the server. I just don't want my time and money to go towards something that you guys don't benefit from.

Good point, I'm all with you then. Come summer, I should have a decent job and can throw some money in if we get the server back up and running.

I hate to say it, but I too think you should stop paying for it. It's not fair for you to put money into it when no one really plays. Like you said, we can always start it back up when people actually want to play. Even if you weren't poor, why waste your money?

For me, I'm just sick of the game being imbalanced as fuck. It gets boring trying to do heavy, then just having to play scout or soldier just to not die every time I walk out of spawn. The game has way too much potential and it seems like Valve doesn't care to realize even a fraction of it.

Either way you decide Chris, I'm sure all of us will understand and back you up.

Basically what I was going to say.

Free time + More of us having jobs will make it a lot easier for us to sustain, and that isn't going to happen until this summer.

So imma give another day or so for anyone with an opinion opposing me taking it down, and if no one stands up then it's gonna get killed.

Donations would be extremely appreciated though, because vent wont work either until the account is activated again.

Forgot about that. Bad thing is, Vent's our most used resource (it's filled up almost every night).

Yeah, I say put it back up in the summer. I still play TF2 with Garret and Bleed but often find myself looking for a different server because Shens is always empty and when I send invites to 10+ Shens members and friends, only maybe 3 people actually get on. :\

Even if it is just a relic, it would still be nice to have our own server again in the summer; hopping/assuming TF2 will pick up again at that time.

Sucks that Vent has to go down too, though. I don't use it but I know it gets pretty packed. :o

Why dont we organize events, for example, Friday night fight night or shit like that, send out notifications through the group. I enjoy playing TF2 With you guys, but no one is hardly on anymore.

Really, though. I think closing the server will just have to do. I mean, I even had technically two threads asking if anyone would be interested enough to start up competitive matches again and pretty much everyone said to wait until the summer because no one really plays. :\ So I just don't see that working out. Even competitive matches and friendly scrims were hard to organize sometimes. D:

I agree with shutting down the TF2 server, but can we just get a different vent server? I'll help pay for some of it, if not the entire thing.

No, no, no. The vent server goes nowhere, I love that thing... What I'm saying is that right now vent is down because the account is overdue last months bill. If I cancel the TF2 server, we still need to get the account not overdue before the vent server will work. SO! If you want vent before thursday, DONATE!...

The TF2 server goes bye bye, at the end of this billing cycle, unless something changes my mind by then

Even after canceling the TF2 server, we'll still have the same vent with the same IP and port and everything...

I love playing tf2, but the server is empty all the time and it's hard finding anyone interested, so it's probably alright letting the server go.

The prices are actually broken out on the donate page, we currently owe $8.45.

The vent server, alone, is $7.50... The TF2 server is costing us an additional $18.19...

So come on, can someone drop in $10 to get the vent server back up?

I tried doing something like this with my Unreal Tournament 3 group. Generally it doesn't work out because people always have something going on. Especially on Fridays, I'm usually playing Magic the Gathering at the card shop, and I'm probably going to get a job soon. Chris is usually off banging his girlfriend and the other Shens members are doing other things.

It simply isn't worth it to keep the server running. Its been generous of Chris too pay for the server himself, but there's no reason for him to continue doing it when its barely used. We'll see how things are doing in the summer, and hopefully by then I'll have a job so I can contribute.

And who knows, maybe by then Valve will iron out some of the balance issues (yeah right).
