I need a new videocard!
« on: August 23, 2009, 06:25:44 am »
So, my birthday is in about two weeks and i've decided im going to put all my money towards a brand new videocard. Right now my videocard is shit (It's a ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT) in tf2, if I zoom in to a pyro's flames I get like 12 fps. Also when there is lots of spam (which happens alot) my fps goes from a steady 30 to about 18. I need a videocard that can run games like Fallout 3 at pretty much max settings, and that can run tf2 seamlessly. I'm thinking between $100-$200 for a really good one. I really appreciate any help you guys can give me and thanks.

My specs.

After talking with weegee about Black guy porn, we find my power supply to be how you say... inadequate. So he says to get ANY videocard i'll need a new power supply. This is the videocard that i'm looking at right now

...Which is slightly quite a bit more then 200$. You could get a 4890 for 200$, or a GTX 260 for slightly less. Not quite sure how they stack up against each other though... Of course, this is just looking for 200$ Graphics cards on newegg. Worms or someone else might have a better suggestion.

Weegees suggestion for a 4890 is a good one. GTX 275 is slightly better though and you can get an EVGA GTX 275 for $210 after rebate.

Jeez, if I remember the correct numbers back when I had that thing that keeps track of various data on TF2, your PC runs TF2 worse than my Mac.
In terms of the FPS.

Also, wow, I didn't know videocards were THAT expensive.
Hope you find a good one. :o

$100-$200 for a videocard is actually not that expensive. High end ones are normally in the $450-$600 range.

Ok, so since it seems that spycrab is too lazy to post like I asked him to, I'll do it for him.

He has a 400W PSU and obviously needs to upgrade it along with his graphics card. So he wants the best PSU/Graphics card combo that 250$ can buy.

I think Spy Crab is good to go now. Last night I helped him realize that his 22" widescreen monitor was much more capable than the 1024*768 resolution he was playing at. :P
Either one of the cards that Worms suggested are a good pick Spy Crab.

Haha! Spy's got a crappy gateway.  You'll never get helpful tech support EVER!

But I could go on and on against gateway...

Ati Radeon 4890:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102841

1GB of DDR5 memory, $215
More than you'll ever need Spy.

You'll need a better PSU, I'd recommend at least 500W:

PSU's don't have to be namebrand, save some money there.

Invest in a good PSU and not a crappy one please. Cosair and PC Power & Cooling are good quality PSUs.

AHAHAHAHAHAHA... wow. Dont ever buy a piece of crap like that. I was talking with Spycrab just a few days ago, and I showed him some 15$ 680W PSU that was like made in mexico or something. I showed it to him as a fine example of what NOT to get.

You get what you pay for and $15 550watt PSUs are going to be garbage.

Power supply might be the most important component of a computer. Shitty power supply = shitty lifespan on all the rest of your components. Don't expect good clean consistent voltage of a POS PSU, and especially don't expect your power bill to be cheap...
