The Lord taketh my PC away, but insurance replaceth I say!
« on: June 16, 2009, 01:47:20 am »
Lightning struck the air conditioner in my window Saturday night...so rather than fix what got fried inside i'm turning it in on insurance and getting a hoss rig built. It just so happens my uncle on my moms side owns a computer repair business, and it just so happens my uncle on my dads side is my insurance agent..lolz...But I need some help picking the right combo of cpu/mobo/ram/vidcard guys.

Intel core 2 quad
BFG GeForce GTX 295/XFX GeForce GTX 285
As much RD RAM as possible

how does that^ sound?

775 is a dead socket now. You can get a good quad for it, but if you want to get something that will last get a x58 mobo and a i7 920.

Its not rocket science, just get the best crap you can. If the Os you will be using =32 bit, get 4gb RAM, if its 64 bit, get 8GB. AMD phenom 2 CPUs are prettymuch all around better then core2 quads, but not by a ridiculous amount. They cost more though. Whats the budget for this bad boy? If there's no budget, then get a freaking core i7.

I would also suggest getting a MoBo that supports DDr3. It really all depends on the budget though.

well, I can pretty much make the budget, cause my uncle will vouch for what I "say" got fried.  I don't want to get ridiculous though.  I want a rig that's ahead of the curve and will be able to support the best games for years to come.

when you say 775 is a dead socket do you mean the intel core2 quad?

What.... 4gb is over the cap of 32bit. You want a 64bit OS with 4gb of RAM. Also factor in that video card RAM is part of the allocatable amount.

AMD phenom 2 CPUs are prettymuch all around better then core2 quads, but not by a ridiculous amount.
Wrong. Intel has been kicking AMD's butt since the core line came out.

Yes worms, thats why I have 4GB while running win2k. I guess the cap is like 3.5GB, but its close enough.

Did you even read the damn post? I said its better then the core2 quads, not any of the newer stuff. i7 Blows AMD's ass out of the water. Intel fanboy sighted  :D

Not a fanboy. I go with whatever is better. My previous PC was AMD. And just saying, previous generation Intels still beat Phenom IIs.

Smitty, if you have the budget, check out this config I made:
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=14046988

You will want to get an aftermarket heatsink to really let the 920 spread its wings and reach high speeds.

Thats a pretty badass rig. Definitely get a good CPU cooler though, stock ones suck pretty bad. Its not an issue of you aren't going to overclock it though. Or is it? >_>

You could do a little better if 2k is the budget though.

They beat them in crysis. I was going off of a chart I saw a few weeks ago that was doing better in benchmark tests. Oh well.

Lol you have a 2k budget but you dont want a good case? That case is mid range to me. My current one was $200.

This is one of the top coolers you can get for your cpu:
http://www.frozencpu.com/products/5664/cpu-tri-58/Thermalright_Ultra-120_eXtreme_775_RT_CPU_Heatsink_-_Socket_LGA_775_LGA_1366_Xeon_AM2.html?tl=g48c369s757#blank

It is expensive, but you can pay less and get real close performance. You always have to pay that high premium for that stuff that is slightly better. If you want to get the slightly cheaper one, just say.

I'm not paying retail for any item, im getting it at cost, but also Id like to have some cash left over from the insurance check to do whatever with...so when I ask about the case it's because I dont care what it looks like...to me a $10 dollar coffee can that holds pc parts is better than a fancy looking $200 case

I understand your point of view. Aluminum would be the nicer ones, but that one is steel. What makes that one nice is the amount of airflow it has with its large fans. So it has good performance and airflow while looking nice too.

That is good as well, but not as good.

32bit will limit the amount of ram you can use from RAM and video RAM significantly if you are looking at 6gb. 64bit XP support is blargh and shouldn't be considered. I recommend you either go 64bit Vista or Windows 7.

It is in beta right now. However, it is pretty stable as it is right now. It will be released retail in October.

Eh, not saying you are just failing. There is just so much hate for vista, but honestly it has matured into a fine OS. People rave about windows 7, but 7's core is Vista.

im basing my opinion on when it was newly released.  I installed this laptops version of vista on my pc and I felt so sluggish compared to xp so I rolled back.  This poor laptop feels like its gonna explode each time it has to do anything other than run vista :/

But if its needed for the amount of ram im gettin then so be it.

goin to talk to my uncle tomorrow..got this wrote down so far
i7 920
x58 mobo
4 or 6gb ddr3
4870x2 or gtx 295
1tb hd
