Need halp selecting parts for a build...
« on: June 06, 2009, 11:07:08 pm »
So i'm considering building myself a new computer, and I wanted to see if you guys had any helpful input regarding what I get. Im trying to keep this thing relatively inexpensive as well.
Heres what I'm looking at getting:
64-bit Vista
Some kind of Phenom2 processor (Possibly the new dual core one)
A really good graphics card (Preferably a quiet one, I've been rolling with a completely silent Nvidia 8400GS for awhile now, and I've gotten used to my computer not making really any noise >_>)
4GB RAM (DDR2 or 3 it doesn't matter to me)

Those are really my only parameters. Everything else is up to you guys. I have a seemingly decent one setup on Newegg for 700$, but I want to see if you guys can come up with something better for around the same price.

Not for gaming. But Chris would say otherwise and pull out his Linux stick. Just don't listen to him. Go with Vista, or wait for Windows 7. Just depends on how soon you want to build this machine.

Also, link us to your public wish list so we can see what you've got picked out already, for criticism.

My graphics card is relatively silent, but I have a louder case (Antec Twelve Hundred) so overall my system is not the quietest. But it is incredibly cooling efficient.

My email is listed in my profile information if you are so inclined to do such a thing. I'll certainly give a look over for you. :) I'll see if I can't get it on the forums from there.

Do you live in a state with a Newegg warehouse in it? (i.e. TN, CA, and NJ) If so you get the sales tax hammer. I once lived in VA, and bought all of my parts for my rig, then I moved back to TN and now I have to pay effin taxes again.

EDIT: Do you plan on utilizing SLI in the future, Weegee?

No, with that card 1 should be enough. Yes I know, the Mobo only supports crossfire, but thats not an issue.

Lol, I wasnt even trying to doublepost that time.

Overall that seems like a pretty solid build. But I think an ATI card might be a better choice with that mobo. 4870s are about the same price now with performance being the same/better. Unless you're playing a PhysX enhanced game. Are you upgrading anything else like mouse/keyboard/monitor etc?

I bought most of my parts at Goodwill. It took forever trying to find the exact parts I wanted, but it was worth the money saved. It was the best financial decision I made. (other than switching to Geico for my car insurance)

But srsly, I love my G9 for my mouse. And my Samsung Syncmaster 2493HM is the shit.

A good graphics card is going to have a fan. Also, why does it have to be AMD?

Hmm actually for budget I still have found Intel to still pull ahead.

How much are you willing to spend on this build?

Make more money so you can build a beefcake machine. And AMD is good because of the price/performance ratio on their processors.

yeah, but their processors are also not as good. I've always been an AMD fanboy, but they've been really far behind the game since the core2duo came out.
